Disclaimer

This is a conceptual project created for creative practice purposes. I am not affiliated with Wise, and the features shown are concepts that are not available in the live application.

The Problem

Relocators are struggling to prepare for their new life financially. More than half of the relocators said that “nobody has helped them feel financially prepared to relocate” (Hawkins and Rohit Chandani, 2023).

Insight

Less than half of adults in the world reach the minimum target score on financial literacy. Our education system does not teach us how to deal and manage our finances in our own country, let alone the complicated financial systems across the globe. That’s why relocators are struggling, that’s why money is stressful.

User Research & Solution Design

Coming from a relocator background, it's important for me to gather different perspectives without biases and assumptions to ensure the user research results are reliable.

As I was working from 9-5, I only had a week to gather insights and understand how the relocators are interacting with Wise, so I:

  • Interview my mentors who relocated

  • Interviewed my family and friends who relocated to the UK

  • Watched over 20+ relocation vlogs specifically about finance and lifestyle to get a good understanding of the users pain points

  • Gathered relocators experience in Reddit relocators community and the Wise App

Key Findings and Focus Areas

Lack of Information

Without a centralised platform for local average prices and hidden baseline expenses (e.g., healthcare, repeat transit, move-in fees), relocators often got caught off guard by the true cost of moving.

For example:
- Cost of flying back home to visit family and friends
- Packing, shipping, storing and cleaning fees when moving between rental houses
- Additional healthcare insurance charges

Lack of Emotional Support

Relocators often struggle with the feeling of loneliness when moving to a new country without any connections, and the unfamiliar and complicated financial regulations doubles the amount of stress on them.

The Relocation Price Trap

Relocators are easy target for landlords to overcharge as they don't know the local average prices.

Solution

All Round Courses

Provide a detailed, comprehensive online course with five modules and online talks to cover essential financial considerations before, during, and after the move.

No more information gap on financial regulations and knowledge in the new country.

Built-in Community

A place here relocators can ask past relocators and locals on topics related to money (including their experience with money) — as experience is the best teacher.

No more isolation and loneliness by connecting users with similar experience and local communities.

Connect In Person

Wise will hold local tours for relocators to provide them real-world financial insights, step to step instructions on how to use Wise, and guidance on budget-impacting aspects of the new country.

No more financial frustrations and lack of emotional support in a new country.

Challenges

Designing Without Sufficient Brand Assets

Since this is a conceptual project, I didn't have access to the official Wise Design System, fonts, or 3D assets. Instead of letting these constraints hold me back, I made use of:

Wise Design System from Figma Community > To Design & Prototype

FontForge & Illustrator > To recreate Wise Fonts

Blender > To develop new 3D Illustration that aligns with my concept

Potential Business Impact

❤︎ Greater Brand Trust & Loyalty

Supporting relocators through a stressful life transition builds deep emotional trust, turning first-time users into lifelong Wise brand advocates.

⬆︎ Unlocks Organic Community Growth

Integrating peer advice and local guides creates a built-in referral loop. Relocators recommend the platform on expat forums, driving organic sign-ups without increased performance marketing spend.

⬆︎ Higher Average Order Value (AOV)

Encourages users to convert full moving budgets upfront. This boosts transaction volume for Wise while saving users from costly bank fees.

☻ Boosting 90-Day Retention & Customer Lifetime Value (LTV)

Educational modules and community features transform Wise from a one-time transfer tool into an essential weekly companion.

Potential Social Impact

✎ Increased Financial Health & Literacy

Bridges the global financial literacy gap by providing free, accessible education with incentivised learning on complex international banking system rules, preventing costly beginner mistakes and financial traps.

Discounts on transfers are provided after users completed a certain amount of lessons to encourage learning.

✌︎ Fosters Connection & Belonging in New Country

Reduces the severe emotional stress and isolation of moving abroad alone by connecting relocators with peer support networks, locals, and community meet ups.

♡ Promotes Peace of Mind During Life Transitions

Transforms moving from a overwhelming, high-stress ordeal into a structured, manageable journey by removing financial uncertainty before users step off the plane.

❤︎ Protect Users Against Exploitation

Protects newly arrived relocators from bad landlords and local price gouging (such as predatory landlord markups) by giving them access to accurate, crowdsourced average costs.

✪ Financial Equity & Financial Inclusion

Ensures that students, immigrants, and foreign workers, anyone regardless of socioeconomic background have equal access to transparent financial tools to build a stable life in a new country.

✍︎ Strengthens Home & Host Financial Literacy

Helps users benchmark foreign costs against their native economy, giving them a clearer grasp of exchange dynamics, tax implications, and financial health both abroad and at home. (This information will be included in Module 5 as part of the online course.)

Key Learnings

"Providing Knowledge itself is already a Big Win for users."

When I'm doubting whether my solution will make a positive impact on the society, my mentor said to me, "Providing Knowledge itself is already a Big Win for users." Combining my research on financial literacy, this made me realise how accurate and comprehensive information can help people make wiser choices and avoid traps due to insufficient knowledge.

If time allows, I will test this feature with real users to gain their feedback and analyse how it impacts them.

Combine Online Courses and Talks into "Wise Moves: Learning"

When I'm reviewing the project after 3 months, I believe merging all learning materials into one place - "Wise Moves: Learning" can help users find related information more easily. "Wise Moves: Meet" should focus on helping relocators connect.
